Use of Silico Manganese
1. Steel Smelting
Deoxidizers: Both silicon and manganese possess strong deoxidizing capabilities, reacting with oxygen in molten steel to form SiO₂ and MnO. These oxides immerse into the slag, thereby reducing oxygen content in the molten steel and preventing defects such as porosity and cracks in the finished steel.
Alloying Agents: After deoxidation, partially consumed Si and Mn remain in the molten steel as alloying elements. They significantly enhance the steel's strength, hardness, and wear resistance, making them widely used in producing structural steel, spring steel, wear-resistant steel, and similar grades.
2. Foundry Industry
In foundries, silicomanganese alloy serves as a inoculant or additive to optimize cast iron microstructure and properties.
Adding appropriate amounts to molten cast iron promotes graphite spheroidization or refinement, reduces white cast iron structure, and enhances toughness and strength.
Simultaneously, its deoxidizing effect reduces gases and inclusions in castings, lowering the incidence of defects like porosity and shrinkage cavities while improving casting yield.
3. Production of Other Ferroalloys
Silicon-manganese alloy serves as raw material for producing other manganese-based alloys like low-carbon ferro-manganese and micro-carbon ferro-manganese.
In the production of low-carbon ferromanganese via the electric silicon thermal process, silicon from the silicomanganese alloy acts as a reducing agent to reduce manganese oxide in manganese ore, yielding medium-to-low-carbon ferromanganese and silicon slag.
This process effectively controls carbon content, producing low-phosphorus, low-sulfur ferromanganese that meets the requirements of special steels.
