How to Determine the Quality of Silico-Manganese?

Physical Form

 

The physical form of silicon-manganese alloy indirectly reflects the standardization of the production process.

  • Appearance Color: The cross-section of high-quality silicon-manganese alloy is silver-gray or gray-black with a uniform luster. If the color is dark or rusty, it may be due to damp storage or excessive impurities, such as excessive iron content, which will appear reddish.
  • Cross-sectional Structure: The fracture surface should be dense, without obvious pores or slag inclusions. Honeycomb-like pores and large amounts of white slag inclusions indicate incomplete deoxidation or poor slag separation during smelting, indicating poor quality.
  • Particle Size and Powder Ratio: The particle size must comply with the agreed specifications. Select the appropriate particle size based on the actual application.

 

Check qualifications

 

  • Test reports: Require suppliers to provide relevant test and analysis reports.
  • Compliance with industry standards: High-quality products should clearly indicate the applicable standards and include information such as the model number and batch number on the packaging.
  • Supplier reputation: Prioritize manufacturers with established production qualifications and verify their qualifications.

 

Trial Use

 

If purchasing a large quantity, a small trial batch can be conducted first to assess the quality through actual steelmaking results.

  • After steelmaking, observe the deoxidation rate: High-quality silicon manganese reacts quickly and produces minimal slag on the molten steel surface. Slow deoxidation and high slag levels may indicate insufficient silicon and manganese content or low activity.
  • Testing Steel Properties: If the mechanical properties of steel produced from this batch of silicon manganese meet the standards, the alloy quality is stable. If problems such as cold brittleness or weld cracking occur, it may indicate excessive levels of phosphorus and sulfur.
