3 important aspects of the silico-manganese production process

Silicon manganese production requires key control over raw material quality, stable furnace conditions, and safety and environmental protection.

1. Raw Material Preparation

Raw material quality directly determines product composition and smelting efficiency, requiring strict control of every detail.

  • Meeting composition standards: Manganese ore must have a Mn content ≥45%, a P content ≤0.15% (low phosphorus requirement), coke must have a fixed carbon content ≥85%, and an ash content ≤15% to prevent impurities from affecting product quality.
  • Uniform particle size: Manganese ore particle size should be 5-25mm, and coke particle size should be 10-25mm. Uneven particle size will result in poor furnace air permeability.
  • Drying: Raw material moisture should be ≤3%. Excessive moisture will lower furnace temperature, increase power consumption, and may also cause electrode soft fracture.

2. Furnace Condition Control

Stable furnace conditions ensure continuous production and require real-time monitoring and adjustment.

  • Electrode Management: Electrode insertion depth should be controlled between 1200-1500mm. Regularly check electrode softening to prevent hard or soft fractures. Parameter Monitoring: Record furnace voltage (380-420V), current (35-45kA), and power factor (≥0.85) every hour. Any abnormal parameters require immediate adjustment.
  • Tapping Operation: Keep the tapping interval within 2-3 hours, and the tapping time ≥40 minutes, to ensure that the slag and molten metal in the furnace are fully discharged and to prevent excessive slag accumulation that could affect furnace conditions.

3. Safety and Environmental Protection

Silicon manganese production involves high temperatures, high pressures, and dust, and strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations is essential.

  • Safety Protection: Operators must wear high-temperature protective clothing, protective shoes, and masks. When tapping, they must stay at least 1.5 meters away from the tapping port to prevent burns from splashing. Operators must also regularly inspect the furnace water cooling system to prevent leaks and explosions.
  • Dust Control: Dust concentration in the workshop must be ≤10mg/m³. Bag filters must be installed during raw material crushing and screening, and a fume collection system must be activated during tapping to reduce harmful gas emissions. Emergency treatment: Dry powder fire extinguishers and emergency water sources must be equipped on site. If an electrode breaks, the power must be cut off immediately, the temperature must be lowered, and then cleaned up. Direct contact with high-temperature electrodes is prohibited.
