Silicon carbide is widely used in refractories, abrasives, and semiconductors. Proper storage not only maintains material stability and reduces risks of contamination and moisture absorption but also minimizes safety hazards during transportation and use.
Why Proper Storage of Silicon Carbide Matters
Moisture and contamination directly impact particle flowability and bonding properties,
Powder form poses risks of dust dispersion and moisture absorption, requiring occupational health and explosion-proof safeguards
Improper stacking can cause packaging damage, cross-contamination
Storage Guidelines by Form
Powder (Fine Powder)
Must be stored in sealed bags (valve bags or composite plastic bags) or lined drums with desiccant inside.
Store in moisture-proof sheds or warehouses equipped with dehumidification systems. Recommended relative humidity (RH) ≤60%.
Dust Control: Use local exhaust ventilation or dust collection systems. Wear dust masks and safety goggles during handling.
Granular/Pelletized
Store in woven bags or bulk bags (FIBCs) lined with polyethylene or moisture-proof film.
Stack on pallets to avoid direct ground contact. Organize by batch within designated zones to facilitate First-In-First-Out (FIFO) practices.
Block/Sheet
Place on stable, level shelves or pallets, avoiding heavy pressure and impact.
For finished panels, cover with dust covers and insert cushioning material between sheets to prevent scratches.
Packaging and Storage Environment Recommendations
- Temperature: Store at ambient conditions. Avoid high temperatures (>40°C) and direct sunlight. Recommended range: 5–35°C.
- Humidity and Ventilation: Maintain dry, well-ventilated storage areas. Excessive humidity may cause particle agglomeration or caking.
- Contamination Prevention: Store raw materials and finished products in separate zones. Ensure strict segregation of silicon carbide with different particle sizes or purity levels to prevent cross-contamination.
