Ferromanganese silica is a compound deoxidizer commonly used in steelmaking, the production of low and medium carbon ferromanganese and the reductant for the production of manganese metal by electro-silicon calorimetry. Manganese is one of the most important deoxidizers in the steelmaking process, and almost all steel grades require manganese to deoxidize. Silicon is also an effective stoning medium, which turns the carbon in cast iron into free stoning carbon.

Silicon-manganese alloys are produced in mineral heat furnaces by simultaneously reducing manganese oxide and silica in manganese ores (including manganese-rich slag) and silica with carbon. The production of manganese-silicon alloys is carried out in a mineral heat furnace, using carbonaceous reductant, manganese ore, manganese-rich slag, sintered manganese ore, roasted manganese ore and silica as raw materials, and lime, dolomite, fluorite and so on as melting agents in an electric furnace for continuous production.
