Ferro silicon is a ferro alloy composed of silicon and iron, which is usually made from coke, steel chips and quartz through high temperature smelting in electric furnace. Common grades of ferro silicon include 65#, 72#, 75# ferro silicon, of which 75# ferro silicon contains ≥72% or ≥75% silicon.
Main uses of ferrosilicon
In the steelmaking industry, ferrosilicon can be used as a deoxidiser and alloying agent. Silicon combines with oxygen in steel to form silica, which can significantly reduce the oxygen content and improve the strength and yield of steel. Adding ferrosilicon to the production process of low alloy steel, spring steel, bearing steel and other steel can improve heat resistance, electrical conductivity and other properties.
In the foundry industry, ferrosilicon can be used as an inoculant and spheroidising agent. It can be used in the production of ductile iron to promote graphite precipitation and refine the grain, and enhance the mechanical properties of castings.
