Difference Between Ferromanganese And Manganese Ore

There is a difference between ferromanganese and manganese ore. Ferromanganese is a smelted iron alloy that is mainly used in the iron and steel industry. Manganese ore is a natural mineral and is the raw material for the production of ferromanganese and other manganese products.

Difference

1. Composition

  • Ferromanganese is an iron alloy whose main components are manganese and iron, usually with small amounts of carbon and silicon.
  • Manganese ore is a natural mineral whose main components are manganese oxides, such as MnO₂ and Mn₃O₄.

2. Uses

  • Ferromanganese is mainly used in the iron and steel industry as a deoxidiser, desulphuriser and alloy additive. It can improve the strength, hardness and wear resistance of steel.
  • Manganese ore is mainly used in the production of ferromanganese, electrolytic manganese and chemical products. It is the main raw material of manganese metal and its compounds.

3. Production process

  • Ferromanganese is produced by smelting manganese ores and iron ores in blast furnaces or electric furnaces and reducing them by adding reductants (e.g. coke).
  • Manganese ores are obtained through mining and need to be crushed and beneficiated before they can be used for smelting.

4. Physical form

  • The shape of ferromanganese is usually lumpy or granular metal.
  • Manganese ore is usually in the form of ore or powder.

5. Chemical properties

  • Ferromanganese has metallic properties and it reacts readily with acids to form hydrogen and manganese salts.
  • Manganese ore is chemically stable and requires high temperature reduction to extract manganese metal.
