Ferro manganese is an iron alloy with iron and manganese as its main components, and usually contains small amounts of carbon, silicon, phosphorus and sulphur. Its composition varies according to type and use.
Main components
Manganese (Mn):
Manganese is the core component of ferro manganese, and its content is usually between 65% and 85%. High manganese content can enhance the deoxidation and alloying ability of the alloy.
Iron (Fe):
Iron is used as the matrix element, the content is usually between 15%~35%, and forms a stable alloy structure with manganese.

Impurities
The main impurities in ferromanganese are silicon, phosphorus and sulphur, and usually the impurities are required to be controlled at a low level.
- Silicon (Si): ≤2.5%
- Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.3%
- Sulphur (S): ≤0.03%
Besides, ferro manganese can be divided into electric furnace ferro manganese and blast furnace ferro manganese according to different smelting methods. The chemical compositions of electric furnace ferro manganese and blast furnace ferro manganese are slightly different, and the carbon content of electric furnace ferro manganese is usually higher.
