A national conference on short-process electric furnace steel making was held in Luzhou, Sichuan Province, on Friday, with the theme of "Developing electric furnace Steel Making and creating a green future".
It is understood that the production of crude steel in China is mainly based on the long process of blast-converter steelmaking, which uses iron ore as raw material. The process of steelmaking has high energy consumption and carbon emissions. The short process of electric furnace steelmaking mainly uses scrap steel as raw material. Because of its compact process, it has the advantages of saving investment, short construction cycle, flexible production organization and obvious effect of energy saving and carbon reduction.
Luo Tiejun, vice chairman of the China Iron and Steel Association, said at the conference that China's electric steel output will account for 9.7 percent of the total crude steel output in 2022, far lower than the world average of 30 percent. In the process of carbon peak carbon neutralization, developing short process steel making is an inevitable trend to achieve green and low-carbon development.
In 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other three ministries and commissions issued the Guidelines on Promoting High-quality Development of the Iron and Steel Industry (hereinafter referred to as the Opinions). "Opinions" put forward, orderly development of electric furnace steelmaking. Encourage conditional BF - converter long process enterprises to transform and develop electric furnace short process steel making. Promoting the integrated development of scrap recycling, dismantling, processing, sorting and distribution. We will encourage areas where conditions permit to develop demonstration zones for the development of electric furnace steel and explore the application of new technologies and equipment.
At present, the long process of steel making to the short process of steel making transfer trend is obvious. Statistics show that there are about 210 steel enterprises equipped with electric furnaces and about 370 electric furnaces nationwide. Of the new steel production capacity replaced by capacity, 27% is electric furnace, with a net steel capacity of 35 million tons.
